Sub-acute Thyroiditis

Viral Infection of Upper Respiratory System
Subacute thyroiditis, also known as De Quervain's thyroiditis, is a self-limiting inflammatory thyroid disorder. It often follows a viral upper respiratory infection and is characterized by the sudden onset of pain in the thyroid gland, which is located in the neck. The pain can be quite severe and may radiate to the jaw or ear.

Signs and Symptoms

Common symptoms include:

Swelling in the neck

Fever

Fatigue

The condition may first cause hyperthyroidism symptoms like palpitations and then hypothyroidism symptoms like weight gain. Typically, thyroid function returns to normal over time without lasting damage.

Diagnosis

At NES™, we diagnose subacute thyroiditis through symptoms, blood tests for inflammation like ESR or CRP, and sometimes ultrasound.

At NES™, our holistic treatment focuses on natural and anti-inflammatory approaches to manage symptoms, and typically, long-term thyroid hormone therapy isn't needed for this temporary condition.
