What is Andropause?

This can also be known as Male Menopause. After the age of 40, hormones such as testosterone start to decline about 10% with each decade of life.

This can lead to symptoms of fatigue, depression, weight gain, and low libido. This can lead to a diagnosis of male hypogonadism, a condition in which the male primary reproductive organs are not functioning optimally.

The gonads are endocrine glands that produce hormones and as a natural part of the aging process, the levels start to decline. Other conditions such as:

  • obesity
  • chronic disease
  • depression, alcoholism
  • stress
  • illness
  • and medications can also further reduce testosterone levels in the body.

Some studies show that low testosterone levels can lead to health conditions such as osteopenia, obesity, cognitive decline, fatigue, erectile dysfunction.

How can you tell if you have low testosterone or are in Andropause?

It can be simply discovered with a comprehensive blood test that includes testing for testosterone levels. Blood tests are recommended to be taken fasting and between the hours of 7-11 A.M for best readings and to help physicians make the best interpretation of findings.

Other signs and symptoms commonly associated with andropause include:

  1. Erectile Dysfunction
  2. Low libido
  3. Fatigue
  4. Depression
  5. Muscle loss
  6. Insomnia
  7. Gynecomastia (development of male breasts)
  8. Mood swings
  9. Irritability

These symptoms can be seen when testosterone levels are below the optimal range. If you want to find out your optimal levels or see if testosterone is an option for you, please schedule an appointment with us and we can help you get your hormones dialed in.

Potential Benefits from Testosterone Replacement Therapy

Several studies have shown that most patients will experience an increased muscle mass and improved body composition when they are determined to be an eligible candidates for hormone replacement therapy.

Furthermore, patients will also experience an improvement in libido, energy, and mood. Long-term benefits include improving bone mass density and helping to reduce the risk of fractures and osteoporosis.

In addition, motivation is a key psychological component that improves when testosterone levels are optimal. Another benefit that is often not discussed is that testosterone can improve anemia levels as this hormone has an effect on red blood cells in the body.

Testosterone deficiency can cause about a 10-20% decrease in a protein in your blood called hemoglobin, which is responsible for transporting oxygen to your body.

If you want to find out your optimal levels or see if testosterone is an option for you, please schedule an appointment with us and we can help you get your hormones dialed in.

Potential Side Effects from Testosterone Replacement Therapy

Like with any hormone,  side effects of testosterone replacement therapy include acne, increased body hair growth, and increased red blood cells.

There is no conclusive research evidence that proves that testosterone replacement therapy causes an increased risk of prostate cancer or even a condition known as BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia).

Types of Testosterone Replacement Therapy

There are several types of testosterone replacement therapy including oral prescriptions, creams, gels, injections, and pellet therapy. What is the best type of therapy for you will be based on your levels and after consultation with the doctor.
