Iodine-Induced Hyperthyroidism

An excessive intake of iodine, often from dietary supplements or contrast media used in imaging procedures, can cause hyperthyroidism. This is particularly true in individuals with existing thyroid abnormalities such as nodules or goiter. The excess iodine prompts the thyroid to produce too much thyroid hormone, leading to hyperactivity of the thyroid gland.

Signs and Symptoms

Some individuals may also experience a goiter, which is a visible enlargement of the thyroid gland.

Personalized Integrative Care and Management

Treatment involves medications that inhibit the production of thyroid hormones and beta-blockers to manage symptoms. In some cases, reducing iodine intake is necessary. Long-term management may include the use of radioactive iodine or thyroid surgery, depending on the severity and response to initial treatments.
