Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA)

Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA) is a form of diabetes that shares characteristics of both Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes. Often referred to as "Type 1.5 Diabetes," it's an autoimmune condition that typically develops in adulthood.

Pathology

Pathology

  • LADA involves an autoimmune attack on the pancreas's insulin-producing beta cells, similar to Type 1 Diabetes.
  • Unlike Type 1, which often develops rapidly, LADA progresses more slowly. Initially, the pancreas can still produce some insulin, but over time, insulin production decreases.
Causes

Causes

  • The exact cause of LADA is not fully understood but is believed to involve both genetic and environmental factors.
  • Like Type 1 Diabetes, LADA is an autoimmune condition where the body mistakenly attacks its own insulin-producing cells.
Signs and Symptoms

Signs and Symptoms

  • Symptoms of LADA are similar to those of Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes, including increased thirst and urination, fatigue, and blurred vision.
  • Because LADA develops slowly, symptoms might be less noticeable initially compared to Type 1 Diabetes.

Diagnosis and Management

LADA, commonly misidentified as Type 2 Diabetes due to its adult onset, requires distinct management as patients often don't respond to Type 2 treatments.

Diagnosis involves blood tests for sugar levels and autoantibodies to detect autoimmune activity. While LADA can initially be managed with oral medications, diet, and exercise akin to Type 2 Diabetes, insulin therapy becomes necessary as the patient's insulin production declines.

Here at NES, we offer holistic care for all diabetes forms, including LADA, focusing on whole-person health for effective physical and emotional management.
