An Overview: Addison’s Disease

Addison's disease is an autoimmune disease where the adrenal glands do not make enough cortisol to support the body. Cortisol is an important factor in helping the body respond to stress by controlling blood pressure, blood sugar, metabolism and inflammation. When there is not enough cortisol available for use, like seen in Addison's Disease, the body has difficulty regulating various metabolic functions. Worsening Addison's disease can cause a decrease in aldosterone and androgens leading to concerns with hydration, blood pressure and libido.
